As spring unfolds we are reminded of how much our gardens mean to us. The simple pleasures we have of watching spring bulbs emerge, buds on trees beginning to swell and waiting for the first pansies of the season to arrive will never be taken for granted. As we watch the tragic events unfold in Ukraine, the sunflower has become a symbol of hope and strength for the people of Ukraine.

Whether your garden consists of acres of land, a few containers of herbs and flowers on a patio or a collection of houseplants – once again we rely on digging in the earth and planting flowers to bring us joy in our lives. Our borrowed motto the last two years has been “To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow” and it still holds true today. We look forward to seeing you this season as we continue to believe in a tomorrow filled with sunflowers.

It’s never too soon to express our solidarity with Ukraine but it is too soon to plant sunflowers, Ukraine’s national flower.

Plant indoors around May 1st for a head start or plant directly outdoors Memorial Weekend. These are mammoth, extra tall sunflowers that should be planted 18-24” apart. ½” deep, evenly moist soil in full sun for 6-8 hrs/day. Most people find outdoor protection is needed because critters love sunflowers too. Pets can help patrol. Try sprinkling cayenne pepper or chili powder after planting and after rain or watering. Never use moth balls or poison bait. Chicken wire well anchored or temporary milk jug hats can be used. Apply organic slug pellets to protect young sunflower seeds and seedling transplants.
